    Hugh Thomas(Author)

Since its first publication, Hugh Thomas's The Spanish Civil War has become established as the definitive one-volume history of a conflict that continues to provoke intense controversy today.

What was it that roused left-wing sympathizers from all over the world to fight against Franco between 1936 and 1939? Why did the British and US governments refuse to intervene? And why did the Republican cause collapse so violently? Now revised and updated, Hugh Thomas's classic account presents the most objective and unbiased analysis of a passionate struggle where fascism and democracy, communism and Catholicism were at stake - and which was as much an international war as a Spanish one.

'Remarkable ... a definitive account'

I found this the best on the Spanish Civil War as it was considered & academic plus the length of War & Peace! I think it as well to have quoted Virginia Woolf to try to explain why it caught so many people's imagination especially when it was not that easy for other nationalities to volunteer to fight. I think the explanation must be that at the beginning, aside from diplomats, others recognised Spain to be the battleground to fight off first, communism & then, fascism without developing into a European or World War. Unfortunately it wasn't possible with WWII following quickly on the heels of the Spanish Civil War. (Standard Oil & Texas Oil supported Franco with substantial supplies of oil on credit). I didn't know Marshal Petain was the first French Ambassador to Franco afterwards. What astonished me was what became of republican survivors in exile - many attained prominent, powerful positions elsewhere in the world. Hugh Thomas also says that Stalin changed his game-plan mid-conflict. We had a Basque au-pair for 7 years & my brother's godfather, Bill Snellgrove has also written a lot on the Spanish Civil War for schoolchildren.
