As an author and medieval historian I’m constantly on the hunt for information both for my own enlightenment and for background research for the novels I write. Too many books are lavishly illustrated or wide in scope, but fall short of the detail I need. Others contain the detail but lack the clarity of narration to make it digestible. Food and Feast succeeds where many others fail. Its content is meaty but wholly accessible, which more than makes up for the use of black and white photographs used to illustrate the content. If you want a richly illustrated overview of the subject this book is not for you. If you are looking for a particularly well-written and intelligent resource you would be hard-pressed to find another book to equal this one. This is the first book written by Peter Hammond I have read. I will be reading more.

Very enjoyable and informative. Good background and some recipes. I was surprised at the range of food available for all classes, and at the similarities across the classes as well as differences. For the merely interested reader the book is well written and enjoyable, for the more 'serious' reader there are informative references/notes and a very good bibliography.

Useful information but I'd like recipes too. Without them the book is a bit dry. Food and Feast after all is its title...
